From Grief to Giving – How One Woman Turned Healing into a Lasting Impact

After losing her mother to lymphoma, Sally found healing at the Cancer Support Center. What began as grief counseling soon evolved into something much deeper—a lifelong dedication to giving back.

Today, Sally is a member of the Founder’s Legacy Society, helping others find the same comfort and support she once needed.

From Grief to Giving

What started as participation in grief counseling and support groups became a turning point in Sally’s life.

“It wasn’t just a place of solace—it became a source of purpose,” Sally shared.

Through the Cancer Support Center, she found not only healing, but a renewed sense of meaning—one that inspired her to give back so others wouldn’t have to navigate their journey alone.

A Smart Way to Give: The Power of an IRA

During a conversation with Executive Director Kristen Kolwelter, Sally discovered a meaningful way to deepen her impact: giving through her IRA.

She was introduced to Qualified Charitable Distributions (QCDs)—a tax-efficient way for individuals aged 70½ or older to support organizations like the Cancer Support Center.

“When I learned I could make a gift through my IRA, it felt like a no-brainer,” Sally said.

“It supports a cause I care deeply about and helps reduce my taxable income. Plus, it satisfies my Required Minimum Distribution. It’s a win-win.”

Making a Meaningful Impact

With IRS guidelines allowing up to $108,000 annually in QCDs, Sally saw an opportunity to give generously without financial strain.

Inspired by what she learned, she:

  • Joined the Founder’s Legacy Society
  • Committed to monthly giving
  • Named the Cancer Support Center in her will
A Legacy of Love

“Knowing I’m leaving a legacy of hope and healing in the place I call home is something I’m truly proud of.”

Sally’s story is a powerful reminder that healing can lead to hope—and that hope can grow into something lasting.

Her journey reflects what’s possible when compassion meets purpose: a legacy that continues to support others for years to come.
